While rarely extensive, local public libraries can be good sources for recent German books. Often you will find that children’s print books in world languages are grouped at one or two libraries. For example, the Seattle Public Library has about 400 physical books and DVDs as well as digital resources (catalog link), but all are housed in the Central branch downtown. Fortunately they can be ordered for pickup to any branch. SPL has some real treasures and updates the collection with new purchases each year. You can also make requests for specific books to be purchased. Similarly, the King County Library System also has a few hundred German kids books, which are also generally up-to-date and include current popular series such as Die Schule der magischen Tiere (catalog link). Most German kids Print books in the KCLS are housed in Bellevue, Bothell and Kirkland, but can be ordered to other branches. When you’ve exhausted your local library’s print books, you can also request books either be purchased or borrowed from another US library via Interlibrary Loan.
