There are many German documentaries and reporting that are not specifically for children, but can be fun for family viewing. Here are some channels worth exploring, but please review carefully and watch with your kids as not all videos are suitable for children and others may need contextualization. I’ve linked to YouTube for your convenience, but please also see my article on where to access German video content, as most content is also available directly from German broadcasters’ sites and apps without advertising or autoplay.

General Channels: NDR Doku, WDR Bayrischer Rundfunk, RBB, Landesschau BW While each station has a regional focus, all offer a wide variety of documentaries, reporting, interviews and edutainment on diverse topics from special events, interesting restaurants, history and places to cooking, politics, sports, and the future.

Narrower Channels: 

Galileo showcases interesting phenomena and novelties, from everything about papaya fruit, how the S-Bahn is cleaned and deep dives into different jobs. 

ARD Reisen Travel shows

ARD Room Tour Home tours where families sharing their unusual or special homes. It’s soothing and nice to see how different people live. 

ARD Garten Gardening tips and inspiration

SWR Handwerkskunst Each episode shows how a specific craft is done

NDR auf’m Land Slice of life reporting about farmers and farming in Germany
